Cypress Corners Sculptor HENRY LAUTZ's Work Featured
at the Outdoor Museum of Art, Chattanooga, TN
April, 2008

What do long amounts of time look like? What do organic forms and human-made forms have in common and how do they differ? These are some of the questions raised by artist Henry Lautz in three recent sculptures currently installed at the Outdoor Museum of Art (OMA) at the Chattanooga State Tech Community College in Chattanooga, Tennessee .
The three painted steel sculptures are part of Lautz's ongoing series of works named after landmarks along with Oregon Trail. Ranging in size from eight to ten feet, they include Scotts Bluffs, Chimney Rock and Independence Rock. They range in size from eight to ten feet. The exhibition was curated by John Henry, Henry, an internationally known sculptor and Distinguished Professor of Art at Chattanooga State Tech Community College,
"The core of all of my work is an exploration of how we perceive and relate to time. These landmarks have multiple meanings referencing both the settlers in the 1800's and contemporary viewers," says Lautz. "They symbolize a mark of one's progress during a long and difficult journey. They also represent a shared experience with those who had passed the same way before and to those who will follow. In addition, the sculptures are monumental-phenomenon in their own right — without any other meaning."
Many years ago Henry Lautz discovered that he has a strong connection with very old objects. Amassing files of such images, he periodically returns to them to see which shapes provoke strong and enduring emotional responses. "I work with these shapes, reducing and abstracting their forms and adding color that strengthen the connection — so that what was once an object of a particular place and time becomes a combination of form, color and line that resonate in a new place and time. In working nonverbally with space, material and color, on a conscious level I explore time at a level that can be articulated — and from an unconscious plane my explorations take me to places that I may never quite understand."
Henry Lautz's work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in museums and galleries throughout the United States, including the Oglethorpe Museum of Art in Atlanta; the Vero Beach Museum of Art in Vero Beach, Florida; the Axel Gallery in Los Angeles; the Buschlen-Mowatt Gallery in Palm Desert, California and Vancouver, B.C., Canada; the Afterimage Gallery in Dallas; the Laura Gilpin Gallery and Gallery West in Santa Fe; Soho Myriad and the Andrew Crawford Ironworks in Atlanta; the Elaine Baker Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida; and the Trudy Labell Fine Art in Naples, Florida. In addition his sculptures are in the collection of the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, Florida, and in many private and corporate collections in the United States and abroad.
